Nearly half the Russian population thinks that the crimes of Joseph Stalin were justified, a poll has suggested, indicating how the political climate in the country has shifted. Two years ago 25 per cent of Russians agreed that the Soviet Union’s rapid economic development under one of history’s most bloodthirsty tyrants could excuse him having sent millions to their deaths.
